Onions and garlic

We know that cats think all things belong to them, but when it comes to onions and garlic, you really need to make sure they stay clear. Many owners give their fur babies human food as a treat every now and then, but it’s important to note that onions and garlic are toxic to cats. Try to avoid giving your cat human food completely, but if you must, make sure it’s onion and garlic free- and that includes powders. 

Raw meat and bones

Raw food is seriously trendy at the moment. Many pet owners claim there are numerous benefits to feeding their pets raw food but there are dangers involved that you need to know about. Raw meat consumption can result in Salmonella poisoning and your cat might also choke on the bones inside the meat. Your best bet is to shop a reputable cat food brand. designed especially for our feline friends. 

Chocolate

We all know that chocolate is toxic to dogs, but did you also know that it can be harmful to cats too? Chocolate contains methylxanthines, which can make your cat vomit and also cause muscle tremors, tummy ache, high body temperature and even an abnormal heart rhythm. Make sure you always keep any chocolate in the house hidden away from your pet and call the vet if they manage to get into the chocolate box.

Milk

This one may surprise you, but a saucer of milk can actually harm your cat. Dairy products contain lactose, which cats have trouble digesting, leading to them having an upset tummy. Some cats may be fine drinking milk and may not show any outward signs of discomfort but it’s probably still best to stick to good old H2O or a cat friendly milk alternative to stay on the safe side. 

Antifreeze

We’re coming up towards that time of year when a bit of antifreeze is literally the only way you’re going to get your car off the drive. We know that the morning is always a rush but always remember to clean up any antifreeze that drips onto your drive. It is extremely toxic to cats and yet cats love to drink it due to its sweet taste. 

Stove tops

If you have a feline friend, you’ll know that they like to do whatever they want (it’s true that cats have 32 muscles in their ears and every single one of them is designed to ignore you!). It is crucial you make sure they don’t walk on the stove tops, especially if you have the electric kind that heats up without gas. Your cat might not realise the stove is on and this could all end in tears for both you and your pet. Make sure your cat is in another room while you’re cooking and distract them with a tasty treat if necessary.

Blinds

Sorry, but blinds and cats just don’t mix. Nothing is more enticing to them than a blind drawstring swinging gently in the air but they’re a recipe for disaster. Your cat can (and will) destroy your blinds, not to mention the fact that they’re also quite dangerous as they can easily get tangled up in them. For pet parents, your best option is to invest in some wooden blinds that are free from cords. 

Christmas decorations

We’re coming up towards the best time of year and we couldn’t be more excited! However, the festive season does come with some dangers for your cat. Make sure that your christmas decorations aren’t small enough for your cat to eat and try to keep the christmas tree in a separate room. The last thing you want is to wake up on christmas morning with your christmas tree knocked over and your feline friend tangled up in fairy lights. Tumble dryers

Cats are connoisseurs of comfort and they will no doubt stake a claim on every comfy nook and cranny in the house. Watch out though; many cats love sleeping in tumble dryers, snuggled up in your clean laundry. While it might seem like the perfect place for a little snooze for your cat, it can be very dangerous if you don’t know they’re in there. Make sure you keep your tumble dryer closed at all times and try to deter them from hiding away inside the machine. 

Medications

It kind of goes without saying that human medications are very dangerous for cats. Make sure you keep any pills or liquid medicines out of reach from your kitty (preferably tucked away in a medicine cupboard) and if your cat is too quiet, always assume that they’re up to no good. Cats have an uncanny way of finding things you don’t want them to find.
